FANS TIPS

Stalling of vaneaxial fans

The vane axial fans are prone to stalling when the air flow is reduced beyond a certain minimum limit due to
increased resistance/pressure. The peak of the fan curve for vaneaxial fans is an unstable region, and stalling
occurs when the fan is pushed to operating in this region. The stalling results in extreme vibration of the fan
which typically results in severe damage to the fans blades and sometimes the entire fan.

The most likely cause of fan stalling is some obstruction in the air path, such as due to faulty dampers or
other causes. It is best to ensure that a vane axial fan air flow is maintained above a certain minimum limit
and away from the fan curve peak, to prevent severe damage to the fan.

Centrifugal fan curve characteristics are different from vane axial fans, and they are less prone to the stalling
phenomenon.
